With the increase of juveniles being prosecuted in adult courts, it is a trend that seems to be growing since the late 1980's. Prosecutors and judges have made no secrete about the fact that if a juvenile commits a crime that is considered to be a violent adult crime, they will be prosecuted accordingly. Juvenile cases may be waivered in Juvenile Court and sent to Adult Court, where they will face the possibility of ending up in an adult correction facility. When the topic of youths being tried as adults, the case of Nathaniel Brazill comes to mind. Nataniel was convicted in 2001 of second-degree murder for intentionally killing his English Teacher. Nathaniel received a sentence of 28 years in Florida's prison system, he was thirteen years old at the time of the crime. Although Nathaniel said the shooting of Mr. Grunow was accidential and all he was trying to do was to scare him, when the gun accidentally discharged. He did not mean to kill Mr. Grunow. Nathaniel's mother and his lawyer claimed that his actions were a product of an abusive father and a violent household. The prosecutor argued, that Nathiel's act was not an accident, but was a premeditated act in retaliation for receiving an F in his class. some questions were raised, should someone of Nathiel age be tried in Adult Court, should he, at the age of thirteen be sent to an adult prison, or should the courts take into consideration his home life while making their decision? Even taking such issues into consideration should not justify a right to commit crimes. The only issues I have with incarcertaing youths in adult prisons, is the fact that they may be put in the population with adult prisoners. This system will not help to rehabilitate the juvenile, it will only make them more of an experienced criminal.
