i agree with antoninette because of the fact that it's issues as stated in the text, are of opposing economic interests, the debate over state versus national power and outright partisanshiphave shaped the development of americans 50 diverse state court systems but when it comes down to discussing on local courts which applies to local control/ local corruption; which speaks a lot about different issues like attitudes towards guns, gambeling and prostitution. With that said I would answer part two of question one, which To what extent are there major variations within your state? Personally the major variations are that prostitution today in Pennsylvania to me was a big issue on how the state wanted to take care of that certain issue a.s.a.p. and local areas in some cities agree to just look the other way ith the prostitutes in the streets but it seems to attract the attention of the state police, state attorney generals, and federal prosecutors.

Yes, there have been discussions of state court reorganization in Pennsylvania. The people who are interested in changing state courts are senators Vince Fumo and Anthony Williams. Recently, the senators have introduced a bill to amend the state constitution to adopt a new judicial selection system for Philadelphia. The judicial selection systems would become a merit selection process. Merit selection requires that statewide appellate judges be selected based on qualifications.
The only requirements to become an appellant judge are a residency in Pennsylvania and a license as an attorney. Some advantages to a merit selection system include: Judicial selection based on qualifications, a judicial system which is free of campaigns/fundraisers, and last the selection of appellant judges would be more diverse.

I was unable to find any information on interest groups that opposed the merit selection system.
